Bussicott

James  Bussicott

We now move on to my direct line, James who had been born in 1855 in Whitechapel.

We had left him living in Chelsea in 1871 with his parents and aged 16 he was working in a shop.

On 21st December 1873 (MC) James Bussicott married Eliza Willis at St George Church in Battersea.

Charlotte was born in 1877 .

My grandfather, James was then born on 12th August 1880 (BC) in 18 Church Road in Battersea. James the father was recorded as a Builder’s labourer.

However five months later on 12th February 1881 (DC) James the father died in St Thomas’s Hospital in Lambeth from pleuro-pneumonia. He was only 26 and left Eliza with a  4 year old and James a baby.

In April 1881 Eliza the widow was living with her father Thomas Willis (a labourer) and her two brothers and a cousin at 1 Little Orford Street in Chelsea.

At the time Eliza was 26 and James just 7 months old.

As you may recall in April 1881 Charlotte was living with her grandparents, probably because of the death less than two months earlier.

However with a young family Eliza did not grieve for too long.

In the middle of 1883 Eliza Bussicott married Frederick William Simms, a groom, in Lambeth.

With him she had three more children, Alice, Frederick and George all born in Chelsea.

In April 1891 living at 24 Fords Place Battersea (a popular street for the Bussicott’s) were

Name DOB Born In Age Profession
Eliza Simms 1855 Chelsea 36 Laundress
James Simms 1880 Battersea 10  Shown as Simms
Frederick William Simms 1853 Chelsea 38  Groom
Alice Simms 1883 Chelsea 8
Frederick Simms 1886 Chelsea 5
George Simms 1888 Chelsea 3

So this was James, my grandfather, aged 10, living under the name of Simms

Frederick William Simms died in late December 1892 aged 39.

So not much luck for Eliza. Working as a laundress she now has 4 young children to support. No record of Charlotte the elder daughter who would have been 14 in 1891.

We find Eliza in April 1901 living at 13 Orbain Road Fulham with the Simms children but without grandfather James who would have been 20. The current descendents of the family believe that James was a soldier in the North West Frontier as a young man.

Charlotte, Eliza’s daughter from James Bussicott and termed single is now living with her mother. She is aged 25 has just had a daughter Rosina Eliza who is only 7 months old.

So living in Fulham are

Name DOB Born In Age Profession
Eliza Simms 1855 Chelsea 46 Charwoman
Charlotte Bussicott 1876 Bermondsey 25 Mineral Water Worker
Alice Simms 1882 Chelsea 17  Mineral Water Worker
Frederick Simms 1886 Chelsea 15 Errand Boy
George Simms 1888 Chelsea 13
Rosina Eliza Bussicott 1900 Fulham 0 7 months

An Alice Maud Bussicott was born and died almost immediately in the quarter to September 1901. My guess this was the second illegitimate daughter of Charlotte.

So this is where we leave Eliza my great grandmother with the last computerised census. However with the exception of James who we know married Henrietta Batchelor there were no other male Bussicott issue from this line.
