Richard and Sarah had a
daughter Sarah who was born in 1833.
She had married a Mr. Egan and
in the 1861
Census was living with her father and her two
children William born
in 1858 in Rugby and Albert
born in 1860 at Barby. Her husband was not in the house
on the day of the census but she was not termed a widow.
Her father Richard had died in
1865 and I could not find any record of Sarah her
husband or her son William in the 1871 or later
censuses. Although I did find Albert in 1871 then aged
11 who was at a school (later I found this was a school
for the blind as he was born blind).
Out
of interest I followed him through as although not a
direct relative he was interesting.
In the 1881
Census Albert G Egan was a pupil at the Blind
Institute in Edgbaston Warwickshire aged 21
In the March quarter 1890 he
married Thyras
Jane Jelfs (what a name!) who
had been born in Birmingham in1845. She was therefore 15
years older than him.
In the 1891
Census Albert G Egan (now 31) was living at 60 Wynn
Street in Edgbaston with his wife now called Thirza
(45). Albert still blind of course was a teacher of
music. Also living with them was his 76 year old
mother-in-law, two boarders (a tailor's salesman and a
sorting clerk at a Post office). Looking at their
neighbours there were a number of professions living
around them.
In the 1901
Census Albert now 41 and Thirza now 55 were living
at 121 Summer Road Edgbaston. Albert was a Professor of
Music. Also living with them was Emma Thompson a 17 year
old servant, Thirza Rowland a niece of his wife, Mary
Morris a housekeeper from Wales and two boarders an
Assistant School Teacher and an assistant in the book
trade.
