The first generation so far
found is Richard Batcheldor who was born in Barby
Northamptonshire in 1796 and he married Sarah (1798-1854).
Sarah, maiden name unknown, was born in Newbold,
Warwickshire.
I have found Richard and Sarah
living in Barby in the 1841
Census. Living with them were 7 children; Anne (20),
Richard (15), John (13), Joseph (11), Sarah (8), George
(6) and Elizabeth (5). Richard the father was noted as
an agricultural labourer.
On the next page of the census
was William Batcheldor noted as aged 15 (which would
mean born in 1826) who was working for a local farmer.
He was probably working there at the time of the census.
This may mean William and Richard were twins but ages
were rounded up or down in the censuses and in the next
census ten years later William was noted as being born
in 1824.
In the 1851
Census most of the children had married or left home
as in that census living in Barby were Richard (55) an
agricultural labourer and his wife Sarah (53) and two
remaining children; William now aged 27 (i.e. born in
1824) and called an agricultural servant and Sarah aged
18 a general servant. According
to Metropolitan Police records William was born on 13th
August 1824.
In late 1854 Richard’s wife
Sarah died in Rugby aged 55.
In the 1861
Census Richard was living in Barby with his daughter
Sarah and her two children. (see below)
Early in 1865 Richard died in
Rugby aged 68.
As it is the earliest place
traced in the Batchelor history I have listed some
information about Barby in the Locations section. I had
never heard of it. Rugby is the nearest large town so
this is probably why their deaths are recorded there.
Barby is situated close to where now the M1 and M45
meet.
